Why there is no alcohol-free port
Port is a fortified wine, not an alcohol-free drink. The IVDP describes a usual strength of 19–22% ABV, with Light Dry White Port starting at 16.5%. The lower-strength white is still alcoholic.
Grape juice is an alcohol-free alternative; it is not port with the alcohol removed.
What is actually poured
Douro grape juice, sumo de uva on a Portuguese menu, is the alternative explicitly included for children at Taylor’s and Fonseca. Ask about adult substitutions before booking.
Two houses put the juice in writing – both of them in the children’s ticket line, but in writing at least:
Fonseca, at Rua do Choupelo 84, describes a child ticket for ages 5 to 14 with cookies and Douro grape juice served in a port glass on its official website. Adult tickets start at €16 per person; select the child ticket separately. The booking page instead lists grape juice for ages 8 to 17 under “Includes”. Confirm the age band and refreshments for the ticket you actually buy; the official child offer and the reseller’s listing differ.
Taylor’s includes Douro grape juice for children. Enter the children’s ages when booking to see the applicable tickets. The adult visit starts at €25 per person and pours three wines – a Chip Dry white, an LBV and a ten-year tawny.
At other houses, ask when booking: one of our party is not drinking – what can you serve instead? Use the operator’s answer to choose the ticket.
Do not expect it to be cheaper
The ticket buys the cellar visit as well as the tasting. Do not assume that declining the wine changes the price: ask the operator whether it sells a visit-only ticket or offers a different rate for non-drinkers.
If your group wants a premium tasting, check before paying whether one person can book a different option and still join the same visit. A refund of the difference or a shared time slot is not automatic.
The ticket for people who want the cellars and not the glass
The guided walk through Vila Nova de Gaia takes two hours, crossing Luís I Bridge and exploring the cellar quarter and WOW district. The starting price of €6 per person is a booking fee; the guide also asks for a contribution whose amount you decide. A tasting is optional and costs extra. The walk starts at the Vímara Peres statue by Porto Cathedral and is in English. Parties larger than six are not accepted through separate bookings; contact the operator first. Pushchairs and electric wheelchairs are not allowed.

A guided walk through Porto can also work for non-drinkers: choose a route and any tasting options to suit your group. A river cruise gives you the lodges from the water; check the departure point and duration of the sailing you select.
Formats that work when one of you is not drinking

Fonseca’s description names three wines, but the included-services list names two (Bin 27 and Siroco). Confirm the selected tasting before paying. Audio languages are English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, German and Korean; Dutch is not offered.
The tasting format varies by house and ticket. Taylor’s offers a self-paced visit and Fonseca a commented tasting. Do not assume a universal fifteen-minute standing tasting; confirm seating and the time allowed if these matter to you.
The cooperage at Cockburn’s is the cellar visit with the most to show besides the glass – on the operator’s own account the only working cooperage left in Vila Nova de Gaia, from €30. The coopers are at the barrels Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30pm; at the weekend the workshop stands still, Saturday as much as Sunday. If you are going along for someone else, this is the one to steer the group towards – bearing in mind that this ticket, too, includes a tasting.

When to skip it
If nobody wants to learn about winemaking or ageing, a cellar visit may be the wrong ticket. Non-drinkers interested in the history can still enjoy the visit. The ticketed sights start at €5, and the city holds many experiences to put in the slot instead.

Our recommendation
For a self-paced visit: Taylor’s at €25 per adult. Allow two to three hours for the visit and tasting, and confirm an alcohol-free substitute for adults before paying. Child tickets include grape juice; this does not automatically extend to adults. A taxi directly to the entrance can help with the uphill journey; the Gaia cable car goes to Jardim do Morro, not to Taylor’s.
Another audio-guided option: Fonseca, from €16 per adult. Confirm the alcohol-free substitute and plan for the uphill approach; it is unsuitable for people with mobility impairments.
If nobody in your group is drinking: the walk through Vila Nova de Gaia from €6 per person as a booking fee, plus a guide contribution of your choice. It is in English and the tasting is optional, at extra cost.
If you are going along for someone else: Cockburn’s at €30, Monday to Friday, for the cooperage. The coopers do not work at the weekend; the cellar and museum remain part of the visit.
Choose by your interest in the visit. Drinking is not required to enjoy the cellar’s history. If you prefer the neighbourhood, choose the walk and budget for its booking fee plus your guide contribution.
And if the interest in port survives the fact that you will not be tasting any, the categories are worth knowing anyway: ruby, tawny, colheita and vintage are a story about wood, air and time, and none of that requires a glass. Where the cellars actually are is the other half of it – not in Porto, which surprises most first-time visitors.
