Attraction Tickets in Porto

Three of Porto’s best-known interiors charge admission, and each does it differently. Livraria Lello sells a timed ticket that doubles as a voucher against a book, so the visit costs nothing if you buy one. The Clérigos tower ticket covers the church and museum as well, but the climb is around 240 steps and there is no lift. Palácio da Bolsa can only be seen on a guided tour, and that tour lasts about half an hour.

Good to know: Not everything worth seeing has a turnstile. São Bento station, with its twenty thousand painted tiles, is free and open whenever trains run — no ticket exists for it, and anyone selling you one is selling you a guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are the port wine cellars in Porto or in Vila Nova de Gaia?

In Gaia, all of them. The lodges sit on the south bank, opposite the old town, about fifteen minutes on foot from Ribeira across the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge. Tour listings usually say “Porto” because that is what people search for.

Is the Douro river cruise the same thing as a Douro Valley tour?

No, and it is the most common mix-up here. The cruise is the fifty-minute six-bridges loop inside the city. The valley, where the vines actually grow, starts about ninety minutes upriver by road and takes a full day, usually nine or ten hours.

Does Porto have a beach?

Several, but they face the open Atlantic. The water stays around 18 °C even in August and drops to about 14 °C in winter, and there is usually wind. Matosinhos and Espinho are good surf beaches and pleasant to walk; they are not warm swimming beaches.

How hard is the old town to walk?

Harder than it looks. From the river at Ribeira up to Clérigos is roughly seventy metres of climb, largely on polished mosaic paving that gets slippery in rain. The Guindais funicular and the Gaia cable car take out two of the steepest sections.

Do I need to book Livraria Lello in advance?

Yes — entry is ticketed with a time slot, and the queue outside is for people who did not book one. The ticket works as a voucher against a book, so the visit effectively costs nothing if you buy one.

What is there to do in Porto when it rains?

A lot, which is fortunate: this is one of the wettest parts of Portugal, with the heaviest rain between October and February. The cellars, Palácio da Bolsa, Livraria Lello, cooking workshops and the concert hall are all indoors and run whatever the weather.
