Pinhão, Peso da Régua, Lamego – which town is on which tour

7 min read

Riverside houses with terracotta roofs stacked above a still green river, mirrored in the water and framed by leafy branches

Douro day trips out of Porto often sell themselves on what they include: wineries, a river cruise, lunch with wine pairings. The itinerary is where to check the towns and stops. Two trips at similar prices can put you in different towns for different lengths of time, and a winery visit does not necessarily leave time to explore a town.

Here is what the itineraries say, town by town, and which name you should look for depending on what you want out of the day.

Peso da Régua: lunch on some itineraries

Régua appears as a photo, tasting or lunch stop on several booking pages. That does not make it the lunch stop on every Douro tour: other itineraries place the meal at an estate in Sabrosa or Cambres.

The full-day CMTOUR itinerary at €50 lists eighty minutes on the coach before Régua, twenty minutes for photographs, seventy-five minutes for a guided visit and tasting, then an hour and a half for lunch. Only afterwards does it drive on. Luxury Composition at €50 follows a similar pattern. Magical Douro at €55 stops in Régua for a fifteen-minute coffee. All three pages offer different options, including a half day without lunch; select the full-day option for the meal.

Look for Régua in the selected itinerary if that town matters to you. A lunch or tasting stop is not a promise of free time in the town centre.

Pinhão: one of several cruise departure points

Pinhão is small – a railway station with tiled panels of the harvest, a quay, a bridge. The quay is a departure point for several tours, but a valley cruise does not necessarily start here.

The optional-lunch tour and the small-group tour with two wineries, lunch and a cruise describe a one-hour cruise from Pinhão. The chef’s-lunch and two-wine-regions tours use Folgosa. The tour with lunch, boat cruise and tastings operated by Luxury Composition Lda places its cruise at Foz do Távora Bar: 50 minutes in the itinerary, one hour in the description. Confirm the sailing time for your option.

If the river is the reason you are going, compare the departure quay and sailing time in the selected itinerary. Pinhão is one option, not a requirement for a valley cruise.

Amarante and Sabrosa: the two that split the field

These are the names that tell you which kind of day you have booked.

Amarante is in Vinho Verde country, as the Douro & Amarante tour describes. Living Tours at €54 stops there in its full-day option; check the duration of that stop when choosing your option. The Douro & Amarante day at €84 gives it ninety minutes, while the two-region day at €80 gives it an hour with a guided visit, wine and food tastings. Our two wine regions in one day piece is about exactly that split. Living Tours lists 6–10 hours overall, depending on the option.

Sabrosa is where Living Tours at €54 places a wine tasting, and the eight-person two-winery trip at €107.46 places lunch and a winery visit. Magical Douro at €55 lists a thirty-minute photo stop. Read the itinerary to distinguish a tasting from a brief viewpoint stop.

Tua appears on the boat-and-train day at €122.50: the itinerary lists two hours for lunch at Tua station.

Lamego: plan a town visit separately

A wine estate in the surrounding area and a visit to Lamego’s historic centre are different things.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios above the town is reached by a monumental baroque stairway of 686 steps, according to Visit Portugal. Allow for the climb if you plan to approach on foot.

For Lamego’s centre and sanctuary, arrange an explicit stop. The itineraries compared here focus on wineries, the river and the other towns described above; do not treat a nearby estate as a sightseeing visit to Lamego.

If commissioning a private itinerary, agree how much time is reserved for the town and what else fits into the day.

If you want Lamego, you need your own arrangement – the train to Régua and a taxi, a hire car, or a private tour built to order. The Douro by train explains the rail option. Check the CP temporary timetable: from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027, trains between Marco de Canaveses and Régua are replaced by buses. Arrange the onward journey to Lamego separately.

What to do with this before you book

Read the selected option’s itinerary alongside the full description and conditions. Timings are indicative and stops can change. Two things are worth checking:

Where the time actually goes. CMTOUR’s full-day example totals 3 hours 40 minutes of coach travel and 5 hours 20 minutes at stops, including lunch, tastings and the cruise: 9 hours overall. This is not all free time in towns, and the advertised 7–10 hours covers different options.

Whether the order is fixed. Living Tours at €54 states plainly that the itinerary is a suggestion and the order may be inverted, and that in bad weather the cruise may be replaced by another activity. Providers generally add that itineraries are subject to change, so treat the clock as an indication.

Town names alone do not determine quality. Compare the selected group size, estates, guide language and included activities as well. For the vehicle question, see small group or big coach.

Everything currently leaving Porto for the valley is in the Douro listings, and if you have not yet decided what shape of day you want, start with the three day-trip formats compared.
