The Douro by train instead of a coach tour – who it suits

The ordinary train still suits people who want to arrange their own day, provided the connections work for them.

The ordinary railway sells transport separately from lunch, a guide and winery visits. That gives you control over the day, but during the winter works the journey also includes a bus connection.
It is not a substitute for a tour and it is not always the cheaper answer.
The line, the fare and the times
The Linha do Douro links Porto with Régua, Pinhão and Pocinho. From 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027, trains are suspended between Marco de Canaveses and Régua. CP provides direct replacement buses between Caíde and Régua and stopping buses between Marco and Régua. This is therefore not an all-rail journey during that period. CP’s 2026 single fare from São Bento is €12.45 to Pinhão and €15.10 to Pocinho; from Campanhã it is €12.20 and €14.80 respectively. These are adult InterRegional fares in the official tariff. CP offers a 10% return discount on Regional and InterRegional tickets; check the fare and connections for your date before buying.
Use the timetable valid from 3 November 2026 for travel during the works. It lists four daily trains each way between Régua and Pocinho via Pinhão. Check the complete outward and return connection from your Porto station, including the replacement bus, rather than pairing separate departure and arrival lists.
The replacement buses cannot carry wheelchairs, bicycles or scooters. Their journey times depend on traffic and weather, and group tickets are not accepted on them. Check CP’s service notices again before travelling, especially if a fixed winery appointment depends on your arrival.
What the journey is actually like
The railway follows the Douro through the valley between Régua and Pinhão. During the works, that section remains a train journey, but the approach from Porto includes a replacement bus.
The rolling stock is part of the appeal. CP describes its MiraDouro services as using Schindler and Sorefame coaches with opening windows. That description does not cover the replacement-bus section. Bring water and something to eat for the journey.
Choose a window seat for the river views. Check which services are actually running on your date before planning around a particular train.
Check whether your connection starts at Porto São Bento or Campanhã. Allow time for any connection shown in the current timetable; the stations are not interchangeable departure points for every service.
What you do when you get there
Pinhão is small – a station famous for its own tiled panels of the harvest, a quay, a couple of quintas reachable on foot, and not a great deal else. That is either exactly right or a disappointment, and which one depends on whether you booked anything.
Check a Pinhão boat operator’s departure time, duration and seating before booking it around your train. Some quintas welcome visitors without a car; confirm access when booking. Régua is farther downriver, with Ferrão and Covelinhas between it and Pinhão on the railway, and is the larger town with the Douro Museum.
What you will not get without arranging it: a winery tour with a tasting at a fixed time. Book that directly with the quinta before you travel, or accept that your day is the river, lunch and the train.
The historic train, and what it is in 2026
CP’s 2026 historical-train season ran from 6 June to 18 October, on Saturdays, Sundays and selected Wednesdays: it has already ended. The programme started with a welcome at Régua at 3pm; departure was at 3.32pm, the return left Tua at 5.07pm and reached Régua at 6.22pm. Stops included Pinhão and Tua, with a welcome glass of port at Régua and music on board.
2026 season fares: It cost €60 for adults and €32 for children aged 4 to 12, with €56 a head for groups of ten or more.
For 2026, CP advertised five historic coaches hauled by a diesel locomotive in its original colours, not a steam engine. If steam is the reason for your trip, check the equipment and dates of any future programme before booking.
Note also that it starts at Régua, not Porto. You arrange and pay for the journey to Régua separately.

When the coach tour is the better buy
Being honest about it: most of the time, for most people.
The guided listing starts at €50 per person. Its full-day option includes two wine stops, lunch and a one-hour cruise; the half day has one winery and no lunch. Take the train if you like trains, you want to set your own pace, you are travelling with children who would not survive two cellar visits, or you are going for two days rather than one and staying up there. The valley with children explains why the ability to turn round and come home matters. Return options depend on the timetable, especially during the replacement-bus period; you cannot turn back at any time.
Or take the hybrid. The full-day boat, train and lunch tour at €122.50 does the valley by van, boat and train in one day – a cruise in the Pinhão–Tua area, lunch at Tua, a half-hour panoramic stretch of this same line, and a winery at the end.

For a half-day option: the tour at €54 offers a shorter programme without lunch or a lunch break; Amarante, the second estate and lunch belong to the full-day options. The page lists six hours, so confirm the return time for your choice. Small-group and standard options are up to eight and 27 people. Pickup is optional and limited to hotels in Porto’s city centre; otherwise meet at Calçada da Vandoma by the cathedral. It excludes people with mobility impairments. Guides are offered in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish; bad weather can replace the cruise with another activity.
For people who came for the railway: boat, train and lunch day at €122.50 combines a shared minivan, shared boat, restaurant lunch, train and winery tasting. It starts at Trindade Domus, Rua dos Heróis e dos Mártires de Angola 49, with guides in French, English or Portuguese. The itinerary gives 30 minutes by train; the cruise duration conflicts between 1.1 hours in the highlights and 1.5 hours in the itinerary, so confirm it and the return time. The railway section is within the valley, not the whole route from Porto.
For a two-day stay, independent travel gives you more time in Pinhão or Régua. During the works, plan the replacement-bus connections before booking accommodation.
