Small group or big coach to the Douro – what the difference buys you
8 min read
Two Douro day trips currently sold in Porto put the number in writing. The optional-lunch tour offers standard groups up to 27 or small groups up to eight; the boutique-winery tour carries up to eight per van, but tastings may have 16 participants. They start at €54 and €160 per person respectively, and they visit broadly the same valley.
Group size matters, but it does not guarantee a shorter day or more time at viewpoints. Compare the actual itinerary and language as well as the vehicle.
What the numbers actually are
These are the figures the providers themselves state, not estimates:
| Trip | Price from | Stated group | Vehicle | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Douro with optional lunch, tastings & cruise | €54 per person | up to 27; small option up to 8 | air-conditioned vehicle | 9,516 |
| Douro with boat, wine tasting & lunch | €50 per person | up to 55; small up to 8; private up to 21 | vehicle | 23,728 |
| Two wine regions, farm-to-table lunch & boat | €80 per person | check selected option | air-conditioned vehicle | 9,565 |
| Boutique wineries with wine-paired lunch | €160 per person | up to 8 per van; up to 16 at tastings; minimum 3 | van | 172 |
| Tastings at 2 wineries, chef’s lunch & boat | €126 per person | up to 14 | air-conditioned vehicle | 2,647 |
Two of these deserve a second look.
The tour with boat, wine tasting and lunch at €50 per person has 23,728 reviews and 4.7/5. It lists standard groups up to 55, small groups up to eight and private groups up to 21, depending on the option. Its conditions also warn that group sizes may increase without notice and the tour may be bilingual.
The €160 van trip goes the other way: it requires a minimum of three participants and will be cancelled if the minimum is not met. Small groups cut both ways. A couple booking a quiet Tuesday in February is buying a trip that might not run.
Where the size shows up during the day
The language. The optional-lunch tour offers English, French, Portuguese and Spanish and says an extra language may be used. The chef’s-lunch tour, the two-regions tour and the boutique-winery tour list English. A smaller vehicle alone does not guarantee a single-language departure.
The pickup. Hotel pickup on the optional-lunch tour must be selected and is limited to Porto city-centre hotels; otherwise meet at Calçada da Vandoma. The chef’s-lunch tour starts at Marbella, Rua de Santa Catarina 5; the two-regions tour at Teatro Sá da Bandeira, Rua de Sá da Bandeira 108; the boutique-winery tour at Rua de Mouzinho da Silveira 34. Do not budget on hotel pickup for these meeting-point departures.
The lunch table. A winery meal is not exclusive to small groups: the full-day optional-lunch tour also serves lunch at a winery. The chef’s-lunch tour names Quinta da Bela Sociedade Vitivinícola and includes eleven wine tastings and two olive-oil tastings. The two-regions tour lists ten wine tastings; its meal may be brunch, lunch or dinner depending on the option. Two winery visits do not mean only two glasses.
The guide’s qualification. Both the €126 and the €80 trips state that their guides hold WSET level 1, 2 or 3 wine certificates, and both open a Vintage Port with fire at the table.
Where the size does not matter
The scenery. The valley is the common attraction, but routes and viewpoints differ by itinerary.
The boat. The optional-lunch and boutique-winery tours describe an hour from Pinhão. The two-regions tour has an hour on a boat reserved for its guests from Folgosa. The chef’s-lunch tour also starts its river section at Folgosa: its description says one hour, while the itinerary allocates 75 minutes to the combined boat and tasting stop. Confirm the actual sailing time if it decides your choice.
The honest recommendation
Choose the standard-group option if this is your first Douro day and a fixed schedule and possible bilingual commentary suit you. Compare €54 per person for optional lunch with €50 per person for the boat, wine and lunch listing, then select the full-day meal option you need.
Choose the chef’s-lunch tour at €126 per person if you want eleven tastings and a group of up to 14. It excludes under-12s and wheelchair users. The two-regions tour excludes under-10s and wheelchair users. The boutique-winery tour lists both under-15s and under-18s as excluded, as well as pregnant women: treat it as adults-only. The boat, wine and lunch tour excludes under-sixes, people with mobility impairments, wheelchair users and visually impaired people; the optional-lunch tour excludes people with mobility impairments.
The small-group tour with two wineries, lunch and cruise also limits each vehicle to eight. It meets at Trindade Metro Station and includes a regional winery lunch and a one-hour cruise from Pinhão. It excludes people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users; guides speak English, Portuguese, Spanish or French.
