Six bridges or seven – why Porto sells both, and what the number hides
9 min read
The bridge count alone does not tell you what you are booking: these listings include fifty-minute daytime cruises, a one-hour sunset option and two-hour cruises with wine, while one yacht operator explicitly includes views of the seventh bridge under construction. For most people the 7 bridges cruise with port wine at €36.90 is the one to book: two hours, a sunset option, port on board, and 4.9/5 across 2,165 reviews. If all you want is the view and your bearings, the 6 bridges Douro river cruise at €20 covers the same six bridges in fifty minutes.

Five cruises, side by side

| 7 bridges cruise with port wine and a sunset option | 2 hours | €36.90 per person | 4.9/5 (2,165 reviews) | couples, and anyone with an evening to give it |
| 7 bridges port wine cruise with four tastings | 2 hours | €45.10 per person | 4.8/5 (810 reviews) | people who came for the port rather than for the boat |

For the cruise with the Burmester option, distinguish the 50-minute daytime sailing from the one-hour sunset sailing. The starting price is for the boat; sunset and cellar options must be selected and priced separately. Reserve the Burmester visit’s time and language by calling the number on the voucher before planning both activities on the same day. Bring headphones for the cruise’s audioguide. In the cellar option, wine tasting is for adults; children do not receive wine, and non-alcoholic drinks are not included.
The top two are the same fifty minutes in the daytime options. The bottom three are the same two hours. Nothing in the column of names tells you which is which.
There are six, and they have names and dates
The six established bridges between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia are:
| Bridge | Opened | Carries |
|---|---|---|
| Ponte de Dona Maria Pia | 1877 | railway, closed since 1991 |
| Ponte Dom Luís I | 1886 | road and metro, two decks |
| Ponte da Arrábida | 1963 | motorway |
| Ponte de São João | 1991 | railway |
| Ponte do Freixo | 1995 | motorway |
| Ponte do Infante Dom Henrique | 2003 | road |
Maria Pia closed to trains on 24 June 1991, when São João took over the line, and it still stands as a monument. That is the full list. One operator’s description goes further and calls Porto “the only city in Europe containing 6 bridges”, which is its claim rather than ours – but the six are not in dispute.
What the seven-bridge boats put in their own itineraries
This is where it becomes plain. The seven-bridge booking pages set out their itinerary stops.
The two-hour cruise with four port wines names, in order: Arrábida, Dom Luís, Infante, Maria Pia, São João, Freixo. Six. The 7 bridges cruise with port wine names the same six. The luxury yacht names five of them plus Foz do Douro.
The itineraries of the seven-bridge cruises describe six bridges.
There is a second tell. GetYourGuide’s current titles and web addresses use different counts: the 7 bridges cruise with port wine sits at a URL reading porto-6-bridges-cruise-port-wine-with-sunset-option, and the luxury yacht at porto-luxury-6-bridges-yacht-cruise-with-wine-snacks. The titles say seven. The URLs say six.
The seventh bridge exists – it is just not finished
To its credit, one operator says so outright: its cruise passes the city’s six bridges, “including views of the future seventh bridge currently under construction”.
That is the Ponte Dona Antónia Ferreira, known as the Ferreirinha after the nineteenth-century Douro wine matriarch. It will carry the Metro do Porto’s Linha Rubi plus pedestrians and cyclists – no cars – between Campo Alegre on the Porto bank and Arrábida on the Gaia side. The announced design has a total length of 835 metres.
It is not open.
So on a boat today you can see a seventh crossing being built.
What the number actually correlates with – and what it doesn’t
Here is the useful part. Sorted by what you get rather than by what they are called, the cruises fall into two groups.
The fifty-minute city cruise. The Ribeira cruise costs €20 per person; the Douro Azul daytime option starts at €18 per person, with sunset and cellar options priced separately. Departure, commentary and shelter depend on the boat. The Ribeira operator warns of waiting for the next departure if full. What those fifty minutes actually show explains the differences.

The two-hour boat with wine. The 7 bridges cruise with port wine starts at €36.90 per person, with 4.9/5 from 2,165 reviews. Compare the four-tasting cruise at €45.10 per person, with 4.8/5 from 810 reviews, and the wine-and-snacks yacht at €55 per person, with 4.9/5 from 2,029 reviews. The port-wine cruise takes up to ten guests from Douro Marina in Afurada; the four-tasting cruise takes up to eighteen from Rua da Praia 430 in Gaia, while the wine-and-snacks yacht meets at Restaurante Marina do Freixo. Check the yacht’s group size for your selected option.
Choose by duration, group size and included drinks, rather than a fixed gap between ratings.

But the label does not reliably tell you which class you are in. A six-bridge name does not imply a fifty-minute trip.
Read the duration and inclusions, not the number. Fifty minutes is the short sightseeing format; two hours with wine is a different outing. The bridge count alone does not explain the product.
Two practical notes before you book
Allow time to reach the marina on your booking confirmation: Douro Marina in Afurada and Marina do Freixo are different departure points. And Afurada is worth the trip on its own: it is a working fishing village, and the operator that departs from there says as much in its own booking conditions, pointing travellers at the local restaurants “with Portuguese prices”.
The port-wine cruise includes blankets and an onboard bathroom; the wine-and-snacks operator states that its yachts are covered and all have a restroom on board, which after two hours is not a small detail.
Everything leaving from the city quays and the marinas is in the river cruise listings. If what you actually want is the terraced wine country rather than the city, choose a day trip and check where any included cruise takes place.
Our recommendation
For most people: the 7 bridges cruise with port wine at €36.90. Two hours, up to ten guests, a welcome drink with port wine among the choices, and a local guide; select the sunset option if that is the experience you want. Entry into the Atlantic depends on conditions. It has 4.9/5 from 2,165 reviews. The six established bridges remain the focus; choose this version for the longer small-group outing.

If you came for the port, not the boat: the 7 bridges port wine cruise with four tastings at €45.10. Four different port wines poured across two hours, 4.8/5 from 810 reviews. Choose it for the four tastings. This cruise excludes people with mobility impairments. It also requires a minimum number of participants; if that minimum is not reached, the operator offers another date or experience, or a full refund.
For a birthday or an anniversary: the luxury 7 bridges yacht cruise with wine and snacks at €55 per person, 4.9/5 from 2,029 reviews. Choose it for the yacht setting, local wine and regional snacks; inform the operator in advance about dietary restrictions, including vegetarian or gluten-free requirements.
Short of time: 6 bridges Douro river cruise at €20 per person or Six bridges cruise with sunset and a cellar option from €18 per person both offer fifty minutes in daytime. The latter’s sunset option lasts one hour and must be selected and priced separately. With young children, confirm admission, boarding and safety arrangements before booking. Ask about the selected boat’s commentary and shelter rather than assuming they are the same on every departure.
None of the five is right if you are picturing the terraced vineyards. Plan a separate valley excursion and check its transport, duration and cruise location. In the city, choose the confirmed route, duration and inclusions rather than the bridge count alone.
