The six bridges cruise – what the fifty minutes really show

8 min read

A crowded open boat deck passing beneath the white steel arch of a motorway bridge, flags on the mast and a lifebuoy on the wheelhouse

Four sightseeing cruises here offer a fifty-minute daytime trip past Porto’s bridges. For most people starting in Ribeira, the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise at €20 per person is the one to book: it leaves from Praça da Ribeira and follows the urban river upstream towards Freixo, then downstream towards the mouth. It has 4.3/5 from 6,996 reviews. Choose it for the riverfront views and departure point; confirm commentary arrangements and language if these decide your booking.

For the cruise with the Burmester option, distinguish the 50-minute daytime sailing from the one-hour sunset sailing. The starting price is for the boat; sunset and cellar options must be selected and priced separately. Reserve the Burmester visit’s time and language by calling the number on the voucher before planning both activities on the same day.

What the boat does, in order

The daytime Douro Azul itinerary lists these six bridges. Other boats’ routes and departure points can change the order:

  1. Ponte Dom Luís I – the double-deck iron arch between Ribeira and Gaia, the one on the postcards.
  2. Ponte do Infante – the concrete arch just upstream, opened in 2003.
  3. Ponte de Dona Maria Pia – the 1877 railway arch, now disused.
  4. Ponte de São João – the working railway bridge that replaced it.
  5. Ponte do Freixo – the motorway crossing at the upstream turning point.
  6. Ponte da Arrábida – the big white arch downstream, near the mouth.

The Ribeira cruise describes going upstream to Freixo and then downstream towards the Douro mouth. The Gaia rabelo returns to its starting quay. These are city sightseeing trips, so plan visits ashore separately.

For the daytime cruises, the fifty minutes describe time aboard, not a walking tour or a cellar visit.

Before boarding

Bring headphones for the audio guides. Douro Azul requires them for its audio guide. The Gaia rabelo offers a QR-code guide in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, which you can listen to or read; it does not provide headphones.

The river can feel cold. Douro Azul advises taking a jacket because the river can be windy and colder. It also recommends a sun hat; ask about shelter on your selected boat if that matters to you.

Ticket validity is not cruise duration. The Gaia rabelo page labels validity as 50 minutes from first activation, but its conditions say one hour; both its itinerary and description give around 50 minutes aboard. Confirm the validity when booking. The historic-route ticket is valid one day. For the Ribeira cruise, a full boat can mean waiting for the next departure, so leave a buffer.

What it is genuinely good for

Two things, and they are both real.

Orientation on day one. Use the trip on your first day to get your bearings before walking the city. From the water you see how Ribeira, the Gaia lodge roofs and the Serra do Pilar sit in relation to each other in a way no map conveys.

The boats themselves. The Ribeira operator describes its vessels as former port-barrel boats adapted with modern navigation equipment. The Gaia cruise also advertises a typical rabelo boat. Choose these for that traditional boat experience as well as the river views.

Which of the four, and what else there is

Compare the daytime options for a short sightseeing trip; the Burmester listing’s sunset option lasts one hour. Choose by practical arrangements:

  • From Praça da Ribeira at €20 per person, 4.3/5 from 6,996 reviews: the Porto-side departure; allow for a wait if full.
  • From Avenida de Diogo Leite 408 in Gaia at €18 per person, 4.3/5 from 17,525 reviews: a QR audio guide in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
  • Valid a full day at €18 per person, 4.3/5 from 4,329 reviews: a 50-minute unguided cruise, with Porto or Gaia departure depending on the option; unsuitable for people with mobility impairments.
  • With sunset and cellar options from €18 per person, 4.0/5 from 6,281 reviews: 50 minutes in daytime or one hour at sunset. The optional Burmester visit needs a separate phone reservation using the voucher number. Children receive no wine tasting, and non-alcoholic drinks for them are not included.

If fifty minutes sounds thin, the two-hour boats with wine on board are a different product entirely, and they are what six bridges or seven is about.

If you want the river fast rather than slow, the 45-minute speedboat costs €45 per person and has 4.9/5 from 529 reviews. It departs from BBDouro at Douro Marina, with quick stories from the crew as well as the fast ride. The operator excludes children under ten and pregnant travellers, says the boats are unsuitable for people with reduced mobility and advises against the trip for back or knee problems.

For the terraced vineyards, choose the day trips that go there; the city cruise does not reach them. Compare other boats in river cruises.

Our recommendation

For most people starting in Ribeira: the 6 Bridges Douro River Cruise at €20 per person. It has 4.3/5 from 6,996 reviews and leaves from Praça da Ribeira. Do it on your first day for orientation, allowing for a wait if the boat is full.

If you are staying in Gaia, or want the stated audio-guide languages: the Six bridges cruise, from the Gaia quay at €18 per person offers English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. Bring your own headphones for the QR audio guide.

If one-day ticket validity suits your plan: the Six bridges cruise valid a full day at €18 per person lasts 50 minutes and is unguided. The provider lists hourly departures from 11 am to 6 pm in April–September and 10 am to 4 pm in October–March. Select Porto or Gaia departure. People with mobility impairments are excluded.

With teenagers, or if slow boats bore you: the Six bridges speedboat tour at €45 per person lasts 45 minutes and includes quick stories from the crew. Respect the minimum age of ten, the exclusion of pregnant travellers and the mobility, back and knee restrictions above.

None of them is right if what you are picturing is the terraced gorge. That is upriver, it takes a day, and fifty minutes under six city bridges is a different trip with the same river in it.
