Port tasting in Porto – how many glasses are actually in the price

A cellar tasting varies by house and selected option. Here is what the money is actually for.
How many wines are included?
Three wines are included at Sandeman and Poças, but that is not a rule for every lodge. Sandeman pours white, ruby and tawny; Poças pours white, LBV and Reserve Tawny. Neither the seating nor a fifteen-minute tasting is a universal format. The Sandeman ticket is guided in English.
Compare the wines, the guide and the visit as a whole. A ticket price divided by a glass count ignores both the pour size and the rest of the experience.

Fonseca’s description promises Bin 27, Terra Prima and Siroco, while its included-services list specifies only Bin 27 and Siroco. Confirm the selected ticket before using a glass count to compare prices. Graham’s does specify the wines in its Main Room options, so a higher price is no reason to assume the count is unknown.
What a premium tasting adds
Graham’s Vintage Room features vintage ports and aged tawnies in a small separate room, starting at €70 per person. The selected tasting matters: do not assume that the starting price buys every premium flight.
This is the part where the arithmetic stops being useful. Nobody drinks a forty-year tawny for the value per millilitre. If you are still learning to distinguish the styles, start with a straightforward three-wine flight before choosing a premium selection.
Two other tasting formats
A wine walk adds several houses; a fado bundle adds music to the cellar visit.
Walking tastings. A guided wine walk through Vila Nova de Gaia includes nine tastings at three wine houses, with both port and Douro wines. It takes three hours and starts at €49 per person. Guides speak English or Portuguese. Under-18s and people with mobility impairments are excluded. Meet at the tourist office on Avenida de Diogo Leite 135, ten minutes early.
Fado with port. Cálem combines a cellar tour in English with two wines and a live fado performance. The whole experience lasts 75 minutes. Choose it for the music as well as the wine, rather than treating the difference from another ticket as a fixed music supplement.
Three places the price quietly goes up
The pairing. Graham’s Premium Tasting with Pairings has three wines: LBV with chocolate, Quinta dos Malvedos with cheese, and 20-year tawny with pastel de nata. Port Essentials has four wines with a different selection. Select the intended option; a food pairing does not itself mean more wine.
The bar afterwards. Extra wines and snacks can increase the bill. At Quevedo, the ticket includes the three wines and their cheeses; additional wines and snacks cost extra.
The second lodge. Two standard cellar visits can repeat explanations of production and ageing. If you want a second visit, see what separates the big houses before booking both. Or take the afternoon in a different direction with a river cruise.
What is not in the price
The selected tasting is included in each ticket in the table. For children and adult non-drinkers, confirm the exact ticket and refreshments rather than assuming every house supplies grape juice or a lower price. Fonseca specifically lists juice for children aged 8–17 and excludes people with mobility impairments.
Bottles to take home are separate purchases. Graham’s premium pairing includes a 20-year tawny, so it is inaccurate to describe it as only extra food with young wines. Choose by the actual wine selection rather than assuming the price identifies an age category.
The short answer
For a first tasting, Poças at €23 per person offers three wines: white, LBV and Reserve Tawny. The visit lasts 90 minutes, at Rua Visconde das Devesas 168, with guides in English, Portuguese, French, Italian or Spanish. Choose Graham’s Vintage Room at €70 per person for vintage ports and aged tawnies; its guide is English-speaking. For nine tastings across three houses, consider the wine walk if you meet its age and mobility conditions. A Douro valley trip is a separate day-trip format: compare the selected itinerary rather than assuming it pours more wine.
Whichever way you go, start with the geography: none of these cellars is in Porto, and the walk across the bridge is part of the plan.
